The digital version of these Kaito Voyager Pro KA600 radios is the way to go. I've had the analog version for a while and liked it, but I wanted the precision of a digital tuner. The ability to program stations is a bonus and I like the ability to charge my cell phone from it.

I will soon get licensed just to be legal, but I actually bought this Midland XT511 GMRS Two-Way Emergency Crank Radio for emergencies. I don't think they would chunk you away or fine you when a crisis is going on, a real crisis. But I have enjoyed listening so much, it has peeked my interest in other gmrs radios and might have found a new hobby.

I have been able to use this radio several times and enjoy the strong sound the small speaker can produce. The signal strength comes through very well.  I really like the radio. I have not tested for distance, but around the block it works well. I use it to talk to the grandkids as they ride their bikes.

The Ambient Weather WR-111 Emergency Solar Hand Crank AM/FM/NOAA Digital Tuning Radio unit itself is very straightforward and simple to understand and use. If it has a weakness, it would be the batteries - even at our advanced stage of civilization, batteries are one of the weak spots in our technological progress.

This a great purchase, get two so put one in emergency supplies and have one in upstairs - works very good and easy to set up. Sound quality is very clear, interface cables and connectors work well with most cell phones. the digital tuning is an excellent design, it allows you to tune to the exact frequency. (very important in an emergency situation), most of the other emergency radios use a mechanical tuning which is less than adequate.
